Alligators for the vast part are much more scared of you than you it ... unless someone has been feeding it of course (do NOT feed alligators). From what I've heard from a neighbor though - alligators and people ~can~ peacefully coexist. However, never leave small children or any pets unattended. AND even if you HAVE coexisted with an alligator for years - do not think one day it may not try to take you for a swim, enjoy watching ~ but always respect them - and call Wildlife Capture if they become an issue. They will only remove alligators more than 5 feet in length. There is no cost to call and have large alligators removed. All alligators removed are destroyed. So if the 'gator isn't causing an issue - leave it alone. Spring is the season they move through our water systems looking for a "date"
